The Department of Sociology is seeking an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science to support the delivery of our new UG Social Science with Data Science programme. The role involves designing and delivering teaching in computational social science, social data science, quantitative methods and related areas. The successful candidate will also pursue independent research, contribute to the wider research culture, and undertake appropriate administrative and collegial duties.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver undergraduate teaching in computational social science, social data science, quantitative methods, and related subjects using Python and R.
  • Support students to understand how data can be obtained, managed, analysed, and presented to better understand social, economic, and human processes.
  • Pursue independent research and contribute to externally funded research activity.
  • Assist with administrative and collegial duties in support of the department.

Qualifications

  • Strong academic background in sociology, computational social science, social data science, or a closely related field.
  • Clear interest in the relationship between social science and data science.
  • Ability to teach quantitative or data‑led methods to undergraduate students using Python and R.
  • Demonstrated developing research profile and potential to contribute to externally funded research.
  • Enthusiastic and supportive teaching style, able to communicate complex material clearly and engage students from a range of backgrounds.
  • Well‑organised, collegial, and willing to contribute to the wider life of the department through administration, student support and collaborative working.
