We are seeking an Assistant Professor to join our Sustainable Materials & Manufacturing Group. The role involves developing research in strategic systems modelling for sustainability transitions, applying methods such as systems modelling, game theory, life cycle assessment, operations research and decision science. The work includes translating complex challenges into robust research programmes and practical decision‑support tools for industrial, societal, and policy stakeholders. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching and learning across WMG programmes, supervise students, support curriculum development, pursue external research funding and engage with the wider academic community. The role requires an individual who can combine analytical rigor with real‑world impact, working collaboratively across disciplines and sectors.

About You

  • PhD or equivalent professional experience in systems engineering, operations research, sustainability science, environmental systems or a closely related quantitative modelling discipline.
  • Expertise in strategic systems modelling for sustainability transitions, with practical experience applying game theory, operations research, decision science or related analytical approaches.
  • Experience translating complex models into clear, credible and practical decision‑support tools for industrial, societal or policy decisions.
  • Strong publication record, recognition within the specialist field at national level and a track record of developing research ideas into externally funded projects.
  • Experience collaborating with industrial partners and translating industrial challenges into academically robust research programmes.
  • Teaching, supervision and/or lecturing experience at university level, with the ability to develop curriculum and deliver high‑quality teaching across WMG programmes.
