Description:

Course Number and Title: ESS492Y – Earth Sciences Thesis Course

Course description: Students in ESS492Y develop a year-long research project in collaboration with a faculty supervisor. The instructor for the companion course ESS492Y schedules semi-regular meetings to develop students’ skills in proposal development, literature reviews and presentation of results in oral and written forms. At the end of the academic year the students are required to present their thesis projects to members of the department. Arts and Science Breadth Category: The Physical & Mathematical Universes (5)

Schedule: TBD (daytimes, Mon-Fri, 3 meetings per term plus full day of presentations in early April)

Sessional dates : September 1, 2025 – April 30, 2026

Rate of pay: Stipend for 0.5FCE including vacation pay as of September 1, 2025:

Qualifications : A Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences or related discipline, knowledge of various Earth science fields. Previous teaching experience at the university level will be a plus.

Description of duties : The lecturer will schedule semi-regular meetings each semester to develop students’ skills in key areas such as proposal development, literature reviews, scientific writing, and presentation of results in oral and written forms. The lecturer will be responsible for the overall coordination and effective delivery of the course. This includes planning and scheduling meetings with the students, organizing the presentation day, designing assignments, assessing assignments as well as final thesis presentations (oral and written), liaising with faculty supervisors and coordinating the evaluation of the final thesis report, submitting final course marks, course evaluations, providing scheduled office hours for academic counselling, and so forth. A past instructor’s syllabus can be made available to the sessional lecturer.
