Course Description
The United States is home to five percent of the world’s population but twenty-five percent of the world’s prisoners, including a disproportionate number of African American, Latinx, and Native American people. This vast carceral archipelago is the subject of extensive scholarly and public debate over the history, ethics, and function of incarceration in the United States. In this course, we will explore the rise of contemporary mass incarceration from an interdisciplinary perspective that draws upon history, sociology, and legal studies to reveal the linkages among state-formation, politics, capitalism, and modern punishment as well as community responses to mass incarceration.
Minimum Qualifications
Master of Arts in History or related field required. Mastery of the subject area as related to the course description
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in History preferred. Demonstrated evidence of superior undergraduate teaching.
Description Of Duties
Developing syllabus; course preparation; Teaching one two-hour classes weekly, in-person lectures; Marking; Conducting scheduled office hours (1 hour/week)
Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located.
Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025

Rate Of Pay
Sessional Lecturer I: $ 9,820.70
Sessional Lecturer 1, Long term: $10,510.36
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.36
Sessional Lecturer II, Long term: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III, Long term: $11,030.36
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
