Associate Lecturer - English Language and Linguistics

The English Language and Linguistics Programme at UWE Bristol are looking for an experienced associate lecturer to teach into a level 6 Gender, (Im)politeness and Power in Language module

The teaching is required to start from the 9 th November 2026 until the 18 th December 2026. The module is delivered on Monday afternoons: 13:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 17:00 at our Frenchay Campus.

Candidates should be qualified in a relevant subject and have Higher Education teaching experience at undergraduate level.

Where you’ll be working

This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed – £300m has been invested recently on new state-of-the-art learning spaces and accommodation while we continue to develop incredible new facilities to enhance our offer even further.

The syllabus includes:

• Theory and Background (Knowledge)
• Introduction to discourse
• Doing discourse analysis
• Women are from Venus-Variation in discourse
• The myth of Mars and Venus
• From ‘difference’ to ‘performance’
• Gender as constructed in and by language
• Sexuality/Queer theory
• Introduction to the concept of politeness
• Politeness Theories and gender
• Impoliteness
• The dynamics of impoliteness as a situated concept
• Gender, impoliteness and power in everyday and institutional talk
• Gender and Gendered in online and workplace contexts

Further Information

The contract is for 18 hours at £50.40 per hour (which includes 1 hour of contact, 1 hour preparation, and 30 minutes of assessment) to be paid after teaching is delivered.

Candidates must have the right to work in the UK (we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role) and be able to start by 9th November 2026).
