Job Description

The opportunity

Are you a skilled maker with a passion for costume construction? Would you like to play a vital role in shaping and supporting the next generation of costume creatives? Wimbledon College of Arts is looking for two Specialist Technicians to support students and staff on our BA and MA Costume courses.

WCA provides a rich, visionary and state-of-the-art environment where performers, designers and creative technologists can collaborate and explore performance in all its guises, whilst bringing to life extraordinary work.

Our technical team supports both our BA and our MA courses by providing professional technical expertise, guidance and knowledge that supports teaching and research whilst contributing critical input to students’ concepts and expressive/creative intentions.

As a Specialist Technician, you will bring your own knowledge and hands-on experience in costume to support and inspire our students, helping them develop confidence and independence as creative practitioners. You will also be responsible for specialist equipment, consumables usage and maintenance, as well as the administration of systems, bookings and maintenance records.

About you

You will be an experienced costume professional with a BA in Costume (or a relevant subject area) and/or significant experience in a similar technical role. Drawing on your specialist skills and knowledge, you will be adept at costume development and will demonstrate the ability to interpret students’ ideas and suggest solutions that bring their concepts to life.

Your professional competence, guidance, and advice will play an instrumental role in supporting students with the transition from education to industry. It will be vital for you to remain updated about print and dye techniques, whilst introducing innovative ideas and workshops to enrich the overall student journey.

Additionally, you should possess effective communication skills, a good working knowledge of IT packages and the ability to manage technical resources efficiently.
