The opportunity

University of the Arts London (UAL) is seeking an experienced academic with a background in design history, cultural studies, or visual and material culture to join us as a Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies.

Contextual and Theoretical Studies (CTS) occupies a central position across the Design School at LCC and underpins all UG courses. Focusing on critical debates within design and its wider sphere of influence, CTS supports students in becoming confident in the research, analysis, critique and presentation of contextual knowledge linked to their emerging design interests.

You will work collaboratively with the course team to deliver CTS in an embedded framework within the BA Graphic Branding & Identity course. Drawing on your specialist expertise, you will deliver contextual and theoretical studies modules in relation to branding and identity, graphic design or visual communication specialisms.

Working as part of a dynamic and research-focused team, you will undertake teaching, curriculum development, administration and assessment of units, as well as on-going scholarship within the Branding and Design Innovation programme. You will also be responsible for the pastoral support of a group of students. Reporting to the CTS Coordinator, you will work collaboratively with the BA Graphic Branding & Identity Course Leader and Lecturers, as well as administrative and academic support staff.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to take an active role contributing to the development of the CTS curriculum, connecting theory and practice in the context of branding and identity, graphic design and visual communication. The curriculum seeks to embed key principles and shared values centred on climate, racial and social justice, as suggested by the Responsible Design Framework.

About you

You will be someone who can combine teaching and assessment experience in Higher Education with knowledge and critical understanding of key cultural debates that shape contemporary branding design and visual communication practices.

You will have a background in design history, cultural studies, material or visual culture, with specialist knowledge or teaching expertise in the following design areas: branding and identity, graphic design, and visual communication.

You will be able to apply innovative approaches to teaching and learning, drawing on your own research to support the development of teaching, learning and assessment practices.

You will also be able to work collaboratively on all aspects of unit design, delivery and assessment, including team-teaching with colleagues across the department.
