Chelsea Fine Arts was established in 2009 and is now a leading provider of art education for children who are serious about learning to draw and paint (website www.chelseafinearts.co.uk). The freelance art tutor opportunity is an ideal part time job for a recent art school graduate who has strong painting and observational drawing skills and who wants to further their career as an artist while earning fees from tutoring. Tutors will learn and apply the Chelsea Fine Arts teaching methods and they will receive on-the-job paid training and paid onboarding to ensure a seamless and consistent tutoring standard to students.
Tutors’ main duties will be teaching students aged 8 to 18 years (all levels) focusing on observational drawing and painting from life. Each tutor works alongside 3 other tutors in sessions that last 2 1/2 hours (plus 15 minutes set up and clear up). The students are taught individually rather than a group and the average student to tutor ratio is 5 students to 1 tutor. We have our own dedicated studios in Chelsea SW10 and Ravenscourt Park W6. The studios are easily accessible by public transport : Chelsea Wharf is serviced by Imperial Wharf overground, or the District line, and Ravenscourt Park is on the District line. Apart from teaching, tutors will be responsible for studio maintenance and class set up.
Skills and Experience Required
We are looking for freelance tutors who want to work on a regular, part time basis on SUNDAYS (10 15 am to 1 15pm and 2 15pm to 5 45pm ) and one or two after school sessions (3 45pm start to 6 45pm). Additional cover work can be added by agreement as well as holiday classes teaching (during school holidays).
Candidates should have achieved a Degree in Fine Arts, preferably with a specialisation in painting. Candidates should have demonstrable skills in drawing and painting from observation. Experience working with children is valuable, as is a passion for passing on skills and knowledge. Candidates should be flexible and willing to learn the teaching methods at the studio.
Tutors should have a valid DBS Check or be willing for us to apply for one on their behalf. Reliability, common sense, good listening skills, patience and a positive, encouraging attitude are essential. A strong work ethic, can-do attitude and teamwork is essential.
