Base pay range

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve – shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to make a real difference.

The role

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering seeks an enthusiastic and adaptable individual to join our technical support team. The post holder will be responsible for the Pilot Plant facility within Chemical Engineering.

The Pilot Plant is a fully operational chemical process plant that demonstrates all of the main functions of an industrial plant such as chemical reaction, solids handling, filtration, heat exchange, and CO₂ capture by gas absorption. It utilises a safe whole process to produce very pure saline solution from a contaminated salt feed.

The plant has a high-spec control room, situated on a mezzanine floor, which closely resembles control rooms found in industry, with a mimic display showing data such as operational status and real-time measurements.

The post holder will maintain the pilot plant facility all year round, contribute to classes run on the plant, liaise with external partners on planning and running CPD activities, particularly over the summer, and perform other technical duties as directed by the School Technical Manager.

The University of Surrey signed the Technician Commitment led by the Science Council, to ensure greater visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability for technical staff across all disciplines. This position offers opportunities to work alongside a diverse technical team and build professional contacts across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

About You

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience working on a pilot plant and a passion for providing high-quality service and student experience.

Enthusiasm and a willingness to work flexibly and adapt to different contexts are essential, alongside excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
