This fully funded PhD studentship is aligned with AURORA³, the new National Strategic Infrastructure at the University of Surrey to support cutting‑edge research in audio, acoustics, and AI. AURORA³ contains a state‑of‑the‑art acoustic anechoic chamber with a spherical loudspeaker array and a world‑first variable acoustics room enabling controllable reverberation times and room volumes.

Responsibilities

  • Validate the AURORA³ infrastructure and conduct large‑scale measurement campaigns.
  • Design and execute measurement protocols for room acoustics and spatial‑audio.
  • Develop data‑driven models for room acoustics and spatial‑audio, exploring machine‑learning techniques.
  • Collaborate with the Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR) team and contribute to publications and conference presentations.

Qualifications

  • Strong academic record in audio, acoustics, signal processing or related fields.
  • First or 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent); a master’s degree is desirable.
  • Excellent mathematical, analytical and programming skills (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Experience in signal processing, room acoustic modelling, deep learning, acoustic measurements or psychoacoustics is advantageous.
  • Evidence of research experience: significant bachelor’s/master’s dissertation, experimental work and literature review.
  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and independent research.

Funding

  • 42‑month UKRI stipend (currently £21,805 per year, tax free).
  • 36‑month tuition fee support (currently £24,300 per year), national or international.
  • Research Training Support Grant (£1,750).
  • Total potential funding up to approximately £150,000.

Entry Requirements
