A unique opportunity for an individual to join as a Laboratory Technician in the Veterinary Medicine School at the University of Surrey, responsible for the technical preparation of UG veterinary Medicine classes, safe use and maintenance of the teaching Laboratories within the School of Veterinary Medicine, ensuring a safe, efficient, and well-supported teaching environment. You’ll contribute to laboratory operations, working with the Senior Technician to provide skilled technical support to assist UG students and academic staff with practical teaching classes while maintaining compliance with Health & Safety regulations.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Preparation and Delivery of Teaching Support: Prepare materials for undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes and provide technical support throughout. Work closely with the Senior Teaching Technician to ensure sessions are appropriately serviced and that all equipment is functioning correctly.
  • Procurement and Experimental Design Support: Liaise with academic and technical staff to source materials and support the design of experimental work. This includes ordering and stock control of consumables.
  • Technical Training and Guidance: Provide technical advice, training, and assistance to staff and students in the application of laboratory techniques and the use of equipment, including specialised methods.
  • Day‑to‑Day Laboratory Support: Assist with the daily operation of teaching laboratories and associated areas. This may include supporting activities in the Research labs and Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL), including work with live companion animals where required.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with Health & Safety regulations, including electrical safety testing, CoSHH compliance, and the correct disposal of waste.
  • Outreach and Engagement Activities: Participate in demonstrations, workshops, and events such as Open Days, Applicant Days, and Widening Participation initiatives.
