Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Virology in Guildford, Surrey

The Section of Virology within the School of Biosciences, University of Surrey, is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and research-active Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to lead an internationally competitive research programme on human virology that aligns with the University research strategy on delivering transformative research and innovation. The University is an internationally recognised hub for innovation, forward thinking and delivering excellence in research with commercial and government networks.

In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), our research was ranked in the UK top 20 for research outputs and the most recent National Student Survey (NSS) ranked Surrey 7th with Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine ranking 1st. The Section of Virology is a well-established and successful research unit. We are recognised for our strengths in molecular virology, cellular responses to infection and zoonotic infections, and multidisciplinary and translational research. Our approaches range from advanced imaging, multi-omics, comparative virology and sophisticated cell and organ culture models that we apply to study several viral groups including poxviruses, herpesviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronaviruses.

The Section has secured ~9M in research funding in the last 10 years, >7.5M of which from extramural sources (BBSRC, MRC, charities). Our research is supported by the School's recent 2M investment in refurbished virology labs for HG2 and HG3 pathogens. The School of Biosciences has additional major strengths in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Immunology, and One Health in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. We also have close links with the hub of public governmental institutions in the area, including the Pirbright Institute, APHA, UKHSA and DSTL, which recently catalysed the formation of the BBSRC-funded Wessex One Health Doctoral Training Programme, led from Surrey.

We are looking for a virologist with a track record of achievement relative to their career stage that will launch and sustain a competitive independent research programme. You should have a research vision that generates research outcomes and secures competitive funding but also complements the current strengths of the Section and generates opportunities for collaborative research within and outside the School. In addition to research, the successful candidate will contribute to administrative and teaching activities, primarily within Virology and Infection and Immunity, increasing progressively within an initial protected time.
