The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil engineering departments in Scotland. The department is ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We have over 600 students, including 450 undergraduates, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. As a Senior Civil Engineering Technician, you will lead the development and enhancement of laboratory teaching across our Undergraduate programme. You will utilise your extensive technical ability to design and manage our undergraduate teaching laboratories in Structural Engineering, Hydraulics, Geotechnics, and Materials (including concrete technology labs). You will work closely with senior staff to develop a vision for the organisation and resourcing of our teaching labs and lead a team of technicians to implement this. You will also support the operations and development of our research activities, working with your team to oversee the research laboratories and the technical research support provided to our research staff and students. You will contribute effectively to wider departmental policy and help develop laboratory procedures around areas like Health & Safety. To be considered for this role you will be educated to HNC/HND level and have significant relevant experience in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or a cognate discipline, or with the relevant industrial work experience. You will have significant knowledge within the field of mechanical or civil engineering. Ideally you will have a background in structures or materials analysis (e.g. cement) and an ability to enhance the delivery of teaching laboratories in these areas. You will have significant knowledge and expertise in an engineering workshop or laboratory environment as well as experience and demonstrable working knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
