We are seeking a highly motivated researcher in proteinexpression and synthetic peptide chemistry to join the CoreShellFibre Foundry programme. The successful candidate will workwith a multidisciplinary team of chemists, biochemists andengineers to pioneer the use of proteins to enable manufacturingof useful microstructures.
This role focuses on recombinant expression and purification ofthe designed protein sequences as well as the solid-phasepeptide synthesis (SPPS) and purification of candidate sequencesegments with self-assembly and biomineralisationfunctionalities. The project will start with the design of candidatesequence segments by the postholder based on the publishedliterature and, in parallel, computational prediction of enhancedsequences by other team members. Then, the postholder willuse SPPS to prepare short candidate sequences for functionalvalidation and recombinant expression to prepare relatedproteins. The characterised material will be supplied to otherchemistry and engineering team members for functionalexperiments. The entire team will analyse the sequence-functionrelationships and to achieve the project deliverables andmilestones.
The postholder will work with the entire team to establishsystematic workflows to keep track of constructs, batches andcharacterisation data, and iterate on the sequence design,peptide/protein production, and microstructure fabrication againstdefined deliverables and milestones. These will be evaluated bythe funder as criteria for continued funding.
To be considered for the role, you should normally be educatedto a PhD level in an appropriate discipline, have significantrelevant work experience in addition to a relevant lower degree,or are close to PhD completion. You will have sufficient depth ofknowledge in recombinant protein expression and purification,and have either experience in SPPS and peptide purification orthe technical background to rapidly acquire these skills. You willhave an ability to plan and organise your own workloadeffectively, conduct individual research work, and disseminateresults. You will have excellent interpersonal and communicationskills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and topresent complex information in an accessible way to a range ofaudiences, and work within a team environment.
Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcome fromcandidates who have: an ability to prepare research proposals,membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (includingthe Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant studentsupervision and teaching activities, and/or experience ofknowledge exchange related activities.
