To provide a range of high-quality advice to students in the area of academic appeals, non-academic misconduct, fitness to practice and accommodation.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Undertake one-to-one advice work in a range of areas including academic appeals, non-academic misconduct, fitness to practice and accommodation
  • Inform students of their rights as students of the University and as private tenants
  • Support and represent students at meetings and hearings within the University regarding academic offences, appeals, disciplinary matters, and complaints.
  • Providing oversight and direction to interns triaging Advice cases, when necessary
  • Ensure accurate record keeping of student queries, casework records and service statistics utilising the casework management system
  • Support data-driven decision making and provide statistical analysis for broader influencing and strategic planning
  • Identify trends within the service and provide evidence-based information to support Elected Officers and Students’ Association staff with campaigns, student engagement and overall student experience
  • Oversee the implementation of Advocacy and Advice events
  • Ensure the Students’ Association maintains up-to-date knowledge of university policies, procedures and national developments within higher education
  • Work with the Head of Student Engagement to analyse, improve and develop the performance and services offered by the Advocacy and Advice Service
  • Support the campaigns taken forward by Officers and the Students’ Association, offering expert input and practical assistance
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and student support services ensuring effective signposting processes are in place
  • Identify areas for training, development and support for the Advocacy and Advice Service
  • Support the wider Student Engagement team providing support and cover for colleagues during peak periods such as Freshers Week, Refreshers and Elections
  • Coordinate the Advocacy and Advice Service’s contribution to amplifying the student voice at the University of St Andrews.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate the values of the Students’ Association (students first, inclusive and welcoming)
  • Promote, support and help deliver the Students’ Association strategic and operational priorities including Elections, Freshers Week, and Refreshers, etc)
  • Provide information and support to students on the work of the Students’ Association and effective signposting, where appropriate, to external services, including the University of St Andrews.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key Students’ Association stakeholders including students, University staff, community and charitable, and relevant national organisations.
  • Represent the Students Association and articulate the Association’s positions at any relevant University of St Andrews’ committees and meetings
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with officers, students and staff working as part of a professional team ensuring that a positive team spirit is adopted
  • Provide support for Elected Officers, enabling their development and work
  • Deliver relevant training sessions to staff and officers
  • Support the democratic structures of the Students’ Association such as representative meetings and other decision-making processes
  • Work within the Students’ Associations’ administration and financial procedures.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • It may be necessary for the post-holder to work out of hours on occasion e.g. to cover events and extended office opening hours. A system of time off in lieu will operate to cover this.
  • You are encouraged to take your leave days during non-peak Students’ Association periods. For example, leave during and just before Elections, and Welcome Week should be avoided.
  • The post holder will be expected to carry out other level-appropriate tasks as may be required by your line manager.
  • All staff are required to take due care of themself and others in respect of Health & Safety in line with the Students’ Association policy.
  • The postholder will be expected to undertake Continuing Professional Development to ensure that their skills continue to match the changing job requirements.

The Student Advice Coordinator will build and maintain relationships with the following people, among others:

  • Students
  • Students’ Association Staff and Officers
  • Student Support Services including Advice and Support Centre, Counselling, and the Disabilities Team.
  • University Professional Services including Halls Life and Residential Business Services
  • School staff including registry and admin teams
  • External support agencies such as AdviceUK
