The Cancer Research UK core‑funded Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (SCTU), based at Southampton General Hospital, specialises in designing, conducting and publishing clinical trials ranging from first‑in‑human phase I to practice‑changing phase III studies.

Our portfolio is 75 % cancer and 25 % non‑cancer, covering primary care to tertiary referral medicine, including pan‑cancer experimental therapeutics, surgery, radiotherapy and early diagnosis.

We run academically sponsored multi‑centre trials nationally and internationally, producing evidence that directly influences routine NHS practice and overseas care.

About the role

Due to expansion, we have a vacancy for a Senior Trial Manager within the cancer portfolio team.

The successful candidate will lead the oversight of a single study, ensuring delivery to required standards, time and budget.

The role sits in a senior post with advisory, leadership, engagement and line management responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the delivery of a single interventional clinical trial, ensuring compliance with required standards, timelines and budget.
  • Work closely with industry partners to develop SCTU expertise into clinical collaboration opportunities, supporting MHRA drug licensing.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to the trial team; engage with multiple stakeholders across a matrix structure.
  • Manage line staff, acting as a manager and mentor while fostering a high‑performance team culture.
  • Coordinate with regulatory, ethics and data‑management bodies to meet governance and legislation requirements.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in trial management on interventional clinical trials, including IMP management.
  • Excellent knowledge of legislation, regulation and governance environments relevant to clinical trials.
  • Strong communication skills and experience of matrix management.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi‑task, meet deadlines and lead effectively.
  • Experience of regulatory affairs, including drug licensing submissions, would be an advantage.

  • Full‑time fixed‑term contract for an initial two years (extension possible); part‑time at 0.8 FTE may be considered.
