Join to apply for the Senior Technician role at University of Southampton. The Optoelectronics Research Centre is a world leading research centre for silicon photonics and optical fibres, based at one of the founding members of the Russell Group Universities. An opportunity has arisen, based mainly within the cleanrooms and optical labs, for an experienced, mechanically biased technician to join a small technical team.
The role
You will join the ORC as a highly skilled and experienced technician to carry out technical duties within the labs and cleanrooms, based mainly in Mountbatten Building (53). The main duties will range from installation of specialist gas lines (compression and welded) and water systems (process chilled water), to manufacturing components using a managed workshop, and installing new lab equipment and furniture. You will play a big part in infrastructure projects, sometimes taking the lead, working from a defined list, utilising colleagues as necessary.
About You
You must be an experienced support technician, with a broad range of skills and experience. You will have excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to manage your own workload. You will be a proactive problem solver with the ability to manage different tasks ensuring that work is delivered on time and to a high standard. You will be a strong team player, but also be able to work independently. It would be advantageous if you have worked in a scientific/lab/workshop environment, or in a cleanroom environment. Experience in gas line fitting, water line fitting (PVC and ABS), mechanical machining and operational health and safety (e.g. IOSH/NEBOSH) would be advantageous. The successful candidate must be computer literate with standard computer packages such as Word and Excel; more specific programs such as Visio/PowerPoint/AutoCAD would be advantageous for you to have experience with. Training will be provided to the right candidate.
What We Can Offer You
Benefits include generous annual leave, company pension scheme, discounted private healthcare and dental, company sick pay and access to a range of staff discounts and offers at local shops, restaurants and service providers. Access to the Universities Pension Scheme and subsidised health and fitness facilities.
We are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment.
