Overview

The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton invites applications from exceptional individuals for the position of Lecturer or Associate Professor in Structural Dynamics. Related areas of interest include, but are not limited to, passive and active vibration control, biodynamics, vibroacoustics, vibration based non-destructive evaluation, nonlinear dynamics and electrodynamic systems.

About ISVR and Facilities

ISVR has been at the forefront of research and education in sound and vibration for over 60 years. We have built an international reputation through pioneering academic research, strong collaborations with industry, and a history of skilled graduates who have contributed to the acoustics profession. We offer excellent experimental facilities including a large 6-axis motion simulator and a suite of acoustic chambers.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to high-quality teaching in structural dynamics and related engineering subjects, including large module delivery and module coordination where appropriate.
  • Lead and contribute to specialist modules aligned with your research areas and participate in curriculum design, module-level assessment, and quality assurance.
  • Develop innovative research programmes, secure external funding to build a research team, and establish yourself as an international expert in your field.
  • Collaborate across the University and with external partners; engage with industry where possible; pursue opportunities to mentor and lead students and researchers.
  • Participate in the School of Engineering’s teaching, education, and leadership development, including mentorship and training opportunities.
  • Support and lead teaching activities if you do not already hold a higher education teaching qualification; if needed, pursue the part-time PGCAP accredited by Advance HE leading to Fellowship of HEA.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in structural dynamics and vibration.
  • An impressive publication record in high-quality journals.
  • A clear vision for innovative future research programmes and the drive to secure external funding.
  • A demonstrable track record of research funding for appointment at Associate Professor level.
  • Experience of working in or with industry is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to innovative teaching practices.
  • A demonstrable track record of teaching in higher education is required for appointment at Associate Professor level.

Teaching Qualifications and Professional Development

  • Be a dependable member of the School of Engineering’s teaching staff, contributing to large modules across engineering-related subjects and coordinating modules as appropriate.
  • Lead and contribute to specialist modules potentially aligned with your research areas.
  • Receive mentorship and comprehensive training to develop research, education, and leadership skills.
