Overview
Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow in Disruptive Manufacturing Approach for Safe and High Energy Solid-state Batteries at University of Southampton Malaysia.
The project is a multidisciplinary, £1.2M EPSRC-funded initiative focused on roll-to-roll manufacturing of next-generation solid-state batteries. The goal is to enable continuous roll-to-roll production of ultrathin, lithium-doped glass films with high ionic conductivity and near-zero defect density, applying fibre-drawing methods from optical fibre fabrication to battery manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Glass manufacture, characterisation and development of the fusion draw process.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, School of Engineering, and School of Chemistry.
- Work closely with fellow researchers and technicians; engage with industry partner Morgan Advanced Materials.
- Utilise world-class glass fabrication facilities, nitrogen-regulated glovebox, and a full range of characterisation facilities (thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman, optical and SEM/EDX microscopy, etc.).
Qualifications
- PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science or related discipline.
- Experience in synthesis of battery materials or related systems, materials characterisation techniques, or optical fibre drawing is desirable.

- Applications from candidates nearing completion of a relevant PhD will be considered. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful PhD completion; prior to qualification, the title of Senior Research Assistant may be used.
