The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Sheffield is seeking a highly skilled Senior Technician to join the mechanical workshop team within the Faculty of Engineering, based in the Caledonia Workshop.
In this pivotal, hands-on role, you will lead the manufacture of specialist equipment and components for vital research activities. You will also play a key role in student success, collaborating with undergraduate and postgraduate projects to guide them through development, design, and production using CAD/CAM software, CNC equipment, and traditional machining methods.
This position requires a high degree of skilled machining accuracy, deep knowledge of engineering workshop metrology, and a strong commitment to outstanding customer service. Beyond your technical duties, you will champion service excellence and top-tier health and safety standards. This includes maintaining critical workshop safety documentation, ensuring environmental and legislative compliance, managing data legally, and keeping an organized, efficient workspace.
As a senior member of the team, you will be proficient in various office and design software, capable of analyzing complex technical documentation, and ready to train and advise others. You will also take on active leadership responsibilities, including the development and management of junior staff, with the requirement to deputise for the Mechanical Workshop Technical Manager when needed.
