The Sustainable Lab Manager will play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of world-class research by promoting pro-environmental behaviour, embedding sustainability in research culture, and leading projects that improve laboratory efficiencies.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Increase pro-environmental behaviour across the faculties through ongoing management and development of LEAF.
- Embed sustainability by contributing to the development of organisational and faculty policies, procedures and standards.
- Identify opportunities and deliver innovative initiatives and projects.
- Advise design teams and colleagues on best practice during lab design and refurbishment, ensuring efficient use of space and resources.
- Build a network of environmental professionals and faculty colleagues to deliver tangible improvements in the organisation’s environmental performance.
- Oversee the management and ongoing development of LEAF and ensure organisational targets are achieved: 100% enrolment of suitable labs by 2027, 100% bronze certification by 2028, and 100% silver certification by 2030.
- Manage the LEAF internal audit process and certification, support faculties through guidance, documentation, events and specialist advice.
- Review and evaluate data (expenditure, energy use, carbon emissions) to baseline performance, identify improvement opportunities and report on performance using KPIs.
- Develop, plan and prioritise programmes that improve laboratory efficiencies and help deliver the University’s environmental objectives.
- Develop business cases, conduct cost-benefit analyses and make recommendations to senior colleagues and committees for funding/approval.
- Delegate work and tasks to project team members, ensuring completion to required standard, within agreed timescales and budgets.
- Advocate sustainability on University development projects, engaging design teams and end users to meet project-specific sustainable lab design requirements and targets.
- Provide advice and support on sustainable lab design, operation and procurement of resource-efficient equipment.
- Carry out additional duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification
- Relevant A-level qualifications in a science subject.
- Significant experience of working in a science, medicine and/or engineering research/teaching environment.
- Up-to-date knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues and best practice in higher education and related sectors.
- Experience managing and delivering short-term projects, including setting objectives, prioritising, planning delivery and meeting deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage colleagues at all levels.
- Ability to think laterally and creatively, identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Experience reviewing data and information, writing reports and making formal recommendations to senior colleagues.
- Experience developing policies, procedures and standards and implementing them within a large organisation.
- Ability to support, advise, motivate, lead and mentor small teams of people.
- Highly motivated, capable of working on own initiative and managing, planning and prioritising own workload.
- Experience working as part of multi-disciplinary project teams and delivering specific tasks within those teams.
Salary and Conditions
Salary: £38,784 to £47,389 per annum pro-rata, with potential progression up to £51,753 through sustained exceptional contribution. Full time. Direct reports: none. Line manager: Environment and IMS Manager.
