Overview

Each semester the Exams Team supports over 600 students with reasonable adjustments (e.g. extra time, rest breaks, use of a computer) in centrally-organised University exams. These students sit their exams in the Special Arrangements Primary Venue or the Special Arrangements Computer Room.

The Special Arrangements Invigilator works under the supervision of a Senior Invigilator to support the running of the exams in these venues.

Semester 1 centrally-organised exams will run between 11-29 January 2027.

Main Duties and Responsibility

  • Act as invigilator under the supervision of the Senior Invigilator:
  • Assist with setting up the exam room
  • Maintain exam conditions in the exam venue (including the exam room, student rest break room, corridors and toilets)
  • Ensure that students’ reasonable adjustments are implemented
  • Ensure exam scripts and materials are collected at the end of the exam

Essential Criteria

  • Abilities commensurate with a good standard of general education including proficiency in written English
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrable understanding and/or experience of working with students or equivalent in one or more of the following roles: invigilator, scribe, reader, oral language modifier, prompter or use of specialist software
  • Ability to remain vigilant for long periods of time (up to 4 hours)
  • Ability to give clear verbal instructions in English
  • Common sense and the ability to follow instructions and processes accurately
  • Excellent timekeeping
  • High level of tact and diplomacy and regard for confidentiality with the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure

Hours/ Availability

Morning invigilation slots start at 8.20am and afternoon invigilation slots start at 1.20pm. University of Reading exams vary in length from 1 to 3 hours and most students with complex reasonable adjustments are allowed extra time and/or rest breaks, so finishing times will vary.

Most exams for students with complex reasonable adjustments are finished by 6pm but occasionally an invigilator may need to work later than this due to the complexity of a student’s arrangements. Invigilators must remain on duty until the end of the exam they are covering.
