Each semester the Exams Team supports around 70-100 students with complex reasonable adjustments (e.g. extra time, rest breaks, use of a scribe or reader) in centrally-organised University exams. These students sit their exams in an individual room with an invigilator.
The Complex Arrangements Invigilator runs the exam in the individual room and provides support to the student.
Semester 1 centrally-organised exams will run between 11-29 January 2027.
Main Duties and Responsibility:
- Run the exam in the individual room
- Maintain exam conditions
- Ensure the student’s reasonable adjustments are implemented
- Ensure exam scripts and materials are returned to the Exams Team after the exam
Additional specialised support (you will be asked if you are willing to cover these roles):
- Scribe – writes or types answers exactly as dictated by the student
- Reader – reads text aloud as directed by the student
- Oral Language Modifier – rephrases question paper wording if requested by the student
- Prompter – provides non-academic prompts to the student as requested (e.g. time remaining)
- Software Supervisor – supervises student using Dragon speech-to-text software or other specialist software (good familiarity with IT is required)
Essential Criteria:
- Abilities commensurate with a good standard of general education including proficiency in written English
- Experience of working effectively as part of a team
- Demonstrable understanding and/or experience of working with students or equivalent in one or more of the following roles: invigilator, scribe, reader, oral language modifier, prompter or use of specialist software
- Ability to remain vigilant for long periods of time (up to 4 hours)
- Ability to give clear verbal instructions in English
- Common sense and the ability to follow instructions and processes accurately
- Excellent timekeeping
- High level of tact and diplomacy and regard for confidentiality with the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
Hours/ Availability:
Morning invigilation slots start at 8.20am and afternoon invigilation slots start at 1.20pm. University of Reading exams vary in length from 1 to 3 hours and most students with complex reasonable adjustments are allowed extra time and/or rest breaks, so finishing times will vary.
Most exams for students with complex reasonable adjustments are finished by 6pm but occasionally an invigilator may need to work later than this due to the complexity of a student’s arrangements. Invigilators must remain on duty until the end of the exam they are covering.
