The Role: The School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies at the University of Portsmouth brings together creative practice, emerging technologies, and industry engagement within a collaborative and student-centred environment. Through a combination of innovative teaching, professional practice, research, and knowledge exchange, the school supports students and staff in developing the skills and expertise needed to thrive in the contemporary screen industries. Our facilities include industry-standard film and television production equipment, dedicated studio spaces, professional post-production suites, and the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR). These resources support a practice-led approach to learning, enabling students to work on ambitious creative projects while developing the technical, creative, and professional skills required by employers across the screen and creative industries.

Applications are invited for the position of Teaching Fellow in Film Production. This is an exciting opportunity for an industry practitioner or early-career academic with expertise in film and/or television production to join a successful and established filmmaking team. We are seeking candidates with professional experience in film, television, or related screen-industries and a commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and learning. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate filmmaking programmes through practical workshops, lectures, tutorials, assessment, and student support. You will help students develop their technical skills, creative practice, and understanding of professional workflows while supporting an inclusive and engaging learning environment.

We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in one or more areas of film production, including technical craft, cinematography, sound, post-production – workflow, colour and grading. Experience of supporting student projects and working collaboratively within a creative team would be advantageous. As a Teaching Fellow, you will contribute to curriculum delivery, student recruitment activities, open days, and other school initiatives. You will also be encouraged to maintain links with industry to ensure that teaching remains current, relevant, and informed by professional practice. A commitment to enhancing the student experience and supporting graduate employability is essential.

The interviews are currently anticipated to be held on 23 September 2026. The assessment process consists of a micro-teach that will take place in the morning followed by interviews in the afternoon. You will prepare and deliver a micro-teach (workshop) to a small group. Please note this is a two-stage process and you must pass the micro-teach assessment to progress to the interview stage. Salary Information: New appointments will routinely be made to the entry spine point (minimum) for the advertised grade, from where the individual will (in addition to receiving annual cost-of-living-related increases) progress through the pay range to the maximum for the grade, within a reasonable timeframe. This ensures fairness, consistency and transparency in our pay structures. A higher starting salary or market supplement may be available for a truly exceptional candidate when circumstances fully justify a departure from our normal policy.
