We are seeking a full‑time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join our Impact and Shock Mechanics research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Begbroke Science Park). The post is funded by ATi/Innovate UK and Rolls Royce and is fixed‑term to June 2029.
Responsibilities
- Advancing numerical modelling methodologies, including AI‑assisted surrogate models
- Designing and conducting impact experiments for model validation
- Developing research proposals and leading individual research projects
- Analysing complex data and generating original research ideas
- Publishing in high‑impact journals and presenting at international conferences
- Contributing to group strategy, funding applications, and collaborative projects
- Liaising with funding bodies and representing the research group externally
- Supporting laboratory capability, protocols, and scientific guidance within the team
Qualifications
- A PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field
- Strong expertise in composite materials, their deformation and failure, and finite element modelling for impact applications
- Experience with high‑rate experimental methods and CAD/solid‑modelling tools
- A strong publication record and experience presenting to external audiences
- Excellent project‑management skills and the ability to work independently
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external partners
