We are currently seeking applications for a one-year, fixed-term Departmental Lectureship (DL) in History of Medicine, tenable from 1 October 2026, based at the University of Oxford, Faculty of History, The Stephen A Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.
The appointment will fulfil teaching needs arising from the vacancy of, and recruitment to, a substantive Associate Professor post and is not renewable. The person appointed to the position will be expected to engage in advanced study or research in the History of Medicine, and to give high-quality tutorials, classes, lectures, and provide supervision in History of Medicine at both undergraduate and graduate level.
About the role
- Deliver tutorials, classes and lectures for undergraduate and graduate courses in History of Medicine.
- Supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Engage in advanced study or research in the History of Medicine.
- Take on administrative responsibilities, including convening undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
- Assist early-career researchers with grant and fellowship applications.
Qualifications
- Completed doctorate in a relevant field, or evidence that a doctorate is close to completion (e.g. dissertation submitted).
- Aptitude for teaching the history of medicine and appropriate experience.
- Depth and breadth of knowledge sufficient to develop course materials and research proposals.
- Publication record commensurate with career stage and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field.
- Ability to use technological innovations to improve teaching and research.
