Role overview: An exciting opportunity to join an ambitious and forward‑thinking team. The Bio‑Support Unit (BSU) is a multi‑site, multi‑disciplinary research facility with its own technical, engineering, scientific and administration staff. We are seeking an enthusiastic person (maternity cover) to contribute to the effective operation of the services we provide to our research community.
Responsibilities:
- Provide specialised support to the Director of BSU and work closely with staff, academics, students and external colleagues involved in biomedical research, 3Rs (replace, reduce, refine animals in research) and animal welfare.
- Work on your own initiative, supervising staff and performing day‑to‑day administrative tasks while effectively managing your own workload.
- Promote a culture of care, prioritise animal welfare and disseminate and champion the 3Rs, including acting as Named Information Officer (NIO).
- Play active roles in the licensing team and ethical review committee (AWERB).
- Ensure knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and other relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g. VSA, AWA 2006).
Qualifications and experience:
- Highly motivated, with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent IT skills, communication skills and enthusiasm.
- Flexible and able to work as part of a team.
- Significant experience in the biomedical research sector.
- Experience of named roles and excellence in research delivery.
- Good knowledge of regulatory frameworks and 3Rs.
Employment details: Fixed‑term post of 1.5 years covering maternity leave, part‑time role of 29 hours per week (0.8 FTE).
