ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a skilled Technician to join our dynamic team within the Faculty of Science and Environment. As a technician here at Northumbria University, you will be part of our professional support team, delivering high-quality technical services to support research and teaching in Biosciences. You will help to set up and support research projects, practical classes and other activities, preparing materials, reagents and equipment in line with agreed protocols.
Working closely with senior technical staff and academic colleagues, you will be responsible for:
- Equipment Management: Operating, calibrating, cleaning, and performing minor maintenance and repairs on a range of standard and specialised scientific instruments and apparatus (e.g. centrifuges, microscopes, tissue culture equipment).
- Stock Control & Procurement: Monitoring and managing stock levels of consumables and materials, processing orders, receiving deliveries, and maintaining accurate inventory records.
- Health & Safety and Compliance: Understanding, promoting, and strictly applying all relevant health and safety procedures to support safe and efficient use of facilities by students and staff, providing technical guidance where appropriate.
- General Housekeeping: Help ensure laboratories are clean, well-organised and compliant with health and safety procedures, including appropriate waste disposal.
There are four vacancies available. One vacancy is offered on a part time (0.4FTE), permanent basis with the postholder working Thursday and Friday each week. Two vacancies are full time, fixed term for 9 months and one full time, fixed term for 6 months.
ABOUT THE TEAM
You will join the technical team within the Department of Applied Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Environment. Our Biosciences laboratories support a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as active research in areas such as microbiology, molecular biology and translational biosciences, with particular emphasis on tissue culture. The team works collaboratively with academic and professional colleagues to deliver high-quality, student-centred practical teaching and to enable impactful research. You will be part of a friendly, supportive environment where sharing expertise and continuous improvement are encouraged.
ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience of working in a specialist laboratory, workshop or similar technical environment.
- A good working knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures, including practical experience of dynamic risk assessment.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team, with strong focus on supporting students and staff and a helpful, proactive approach.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with good IT skills and confidence using standard digital tools.
- The ability to plan and prioritise your own workload in line with team and Faculty requirements.
It is desirable that you are qualified to degree level, or have equivalent professional experience, in a relevant practice-based subject (e.g. Biosciences or related discipline).
