As a technician demonstrator in the Art and Design Subject area you will work predominantly with staff and students on BA Illustration. Experienced and knowledgeable across practical illustration, graphic design but with a defined area of technical and practical expertise, you will devise and deliver technical inductions, demonstrations, and workshops, and provide specialist advice and guidance drawn from your expertise of illustration and/or graphic design.

Demonstration duties will involve face to face teaching and in-class support as well as blended digital tuition. This support will take place in dedicated university resource areas, studios and from time to time on location, for example, with exhibitions. Masterclasses at varying levels may be delivered to a range of students in Art and Design on occasion.

The generation of schemes of work and teaching materials will be required, as will navigating, and using our Virtual Learning Environment. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the functions of a range of software used in creative visual arts industries including an advanced working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. Working knowledge of – or a willingness to learn – moving image/animation or interactive media (AR, VR, XR) is also required.

You will need to be flexible in your approach to the working day and environment as this varied post supports a diverse range of individuals, therefore the ability to be flexible and be a team player is essential. Experience of supporting learners in a further or higher education context would be advantageous.

General technician duties will involve ensuring that studios and associated specialist equipment is maintained, and that full health and safety processes are adhered to. Setting up of exhibitions and specialist kit on and off campus will be needed on occasion throughout the academic year.

About you

We are seeking an individual with prior working knowledge of industry standard software and hardware in creative visual arts. You will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge ofthe Adobe Creative Suite and have a working knowledge of moving image and interactive media. Currency is key to this post and the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of software and hardware for the benefit of staff and students in the Art and Design Subject Area.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • HND/Degree in a design discipline and/or higher degree or industry experience

Desirable:

  • Professional recognition as an HEA Associate Fellow and/or teaching qualification recognised by HESA, or a willingness to obtain within a reasonable timeframe

Faculty

This specialist post will primarily support the BA Illustration course but may also on occasion support other creative programmes that sit within the vibrant subject area of Art and Design in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

The then School of Art merging in 1975 with Northampton colleges of Education and Technology to form a college of higher education, Nene College. This became University College Northampton in 1999 and gained full university status as The University of Northampton in 2005.

The subject area is diverse and alongside illustration and graphic communication includes fine arts, photography, product design, architectural technology and interior architecture and spatial design.
