Research and Responsibilities

Fellows will undertake a research project developed in consultation with GCHQ colleagues, addressing issues relevant to national security and GCHQ’s research agenda. Some research will be academic, aiming for publication in relevant journals, while others will be classified for internal use within the national security community. Fellows will experience working in two distinct research environments and navigate their complexities.

Location and Mentorship

Fellows will be based at the University of Manchester, with mentors from both the university and GCHQ to provide guidance. Regular attendance at GCHQ’s Manchester office is expected, and candidates should be located in the North-West or willing to relocate.

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed or be close to completing a relevant PhD, with expertise in cross-cultural psychology, social psychology, or social influence. This should be detailed in the application letter, and shortlisted candidates will present their expertise at interview.

Security and Confidentiality

Parts of the CRP’s work are highly confidential and require security clearance from GCHQ, subject to the Official Secrets Act. UK residents are typically eligible to apply, but applicants should verify their eligibility. Information on vetting can be found on the UK Government security vetting website. The university reserves the right to terminate the fellowship if security clearance is lost.
