The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW; https://www.mlw.mw) and the University of Liverpool seek a senior mathematical modeller to establish and lead a team of mathematical modellers in the newly formed Data Science and Computational Modelling Unit (DSCMU) at MLW. MLW has renewed Wellcome core funding for seven years (2025-2032). As part of its 10-year strategic plan, MLW aims to develop its capacity in data science to support and lead high-impact research in sub‐Saharan Africa. MLW already has an established team of statisticians, and the former Statistical Support Unit has been restructured into the DSCMU.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and delivering world‐leading research in modelling for health protection data science.
- Applying for competitive research grants and publishing peer‐reviewed research.
- Providing strategic leadership in setting up and running a team of mathematical modellers.
- Contributing to teaching and obtaining a teaching qualification through the University if not already held.
The post is a collaboration between the DSCMU at MLW and the Civic Health Innovation Labs (CHIL), an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Liverpool. Candidates will be a core member of CHIL and the Department of Public Health Policy and Systems at the University of Liverpool.
Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area for mathematical modelling with applications to health data science. This is a permanent position.
