About the role

We are seeking a Research Associate to join our team, supported by the University of Leicester in relation to the NIHR-BRC Core and Cardiovascular Themes. You will become part of a dynamic and rapidly expanding research group that has secured over £9 million in research grants in the past 24 months.

You will be based at the University of Leicester van Geest Omics facility, located at the Hodgkin Building, in a state-of-the-art environment. Our research infrastructure includes a NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), a BHF-funded Clinical Research Centre, a BHF Accelerator centre award, a 4-year PhD programme, the van Geest MultiOmics facility equipped with advanced mass spectrometers including a timsTOF HT platform, and a NIHR Clinical Research Facility with a dedicated 3T MRI scanner and clinical physiology labs.

Your work will focus on research around early detection, diagnosis, and prevention of heart failure in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The primary project involves developing omic signatures and pathway analyses for subclinical cardiovascular dysfunction detected by cardiac MRI in a multi-ethnic cohort of asymptomatic adults with type 2 diabetes (PREDICT study). Additionally, you will be involved in a multi-centre RCT of low-calorie diet in HFpEF with MRI and plasma sampling.

You will manage sample preparation using automated platforms and acquire mass spectrometry data for proteomic and metabolomic analysis of plasma samples. You will also handle downstream bioinformatics and perform pathway enrichment analyses to identify key disease processes in early heart failure in type 2 diabetes. Further, you will assist in designing targeted assays for candidate biomarkers using the Waters TQ-XS platform, to verify and validate these biomarkers.

The ideal candidate is a researcher capable of obtaining independent funding as a principal investigator, with knowledge of proteomic and small molecule sample preparation and mass spectrometry data acquisition. Experience with type 2 diabetes and/or cardiac imaging is desirable.
