Overview

We are looking for a Research Associate to join our School of Chemistry, exploring quantum vortices in superfluids by using molecules as messengers. Our focus will be on small helium nanodroplets containing a few thousand helium atoms, a size which enables us to use optical spectroscopy to interrogate the molecular probe. This project will advance our understanding of quantum hydrodynamics in superfluids.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental investigations of quantum hydrodynamics in superfluids by using molecular probes in helium nanodroplets.
  • Operate and troubleshoot ultrahigh vacuum systems, cryogenic setups, and laser spectroscopy experiments.
  • Prepare samples, collect and analyze spectroscopic data, and contribute to the interpretation of results in the context of quantum vortices and nanoscience.
  • Collaborate with an international research team with expertise in helium droplets, spectroscopy and nanoscience; contribute to project planning, feasibility assessment, and dissemination of findings.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent professional qualification in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Nanoscience or a related discipline.
  • Experience with ultrahigh vacuum systems, cryogenics, and laser spectroscopy.
  • Evidence of research productivity (publications and presentations), particularly in relevant innovative research within the field.

About the role and environment

  • The project is led by an internationally leading research team; facilities include a UHV helium droplet source, tunable OPO laser and mass spectrometer, and are fully operational.
