Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an interest in tribology, surfaces or interfaces? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities and an emerging research area?
Maritime transport remains one of the most energy-efficient means for transporting goods and raw materials globally. However, it is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for around 2.9% of global emissions generated by human activities. As the sector moves towards decarbonisation, alternative fuels are expected to play a key role in reducing its carbon footprint. Despite this, the impact of these new fuels on the performance and reliability of existing lubricant technologies remains poorly understood.
This project aims to investigate the potential impact of alternative fuels on the friction and wear performance of marine engine lubricants. Using bespoke wear-testing rigs and advanced analytical facilities, we will investigate how fuel-lubricant interactions impact friction, wear and overall system reliability under representative engine operating conditions.
We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
