Overview
You will lead innovative research combining biological and ecological sciences with engineering to revolutionize fish-friendly pump technology. Working with academic experts from the University of Hull International Fisheries Institute and industry engineers from Pumpflow, you will operate in a state-of-the-art test facility to develop a Next Generation Pump (NGP) that protects and conserves critically endangered fish populations in river ecosystems. As the KTP Associate, you will aid in the design and development of the NGP by utilising hydrological sensor technologies and high-speed video imaging to understand pump interactions. You will manage complex data analysis processes and work with live animals using UK Home Office methodologies and industry regulatory standards to achieve high scientific requirements. Throughout the project, you will collaborate with Pumpflow\’s engineering team to present research findings that translate into practical solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead innovative research combining biological/ecological sciences with engineering to advance fish-friendly pump technology.
- Collaborate with academic and industry partners (University of Hull International Fisheries Institute and Pumpflow) in a state-of-the-art test facility.
- Assist in the design and development of the Next Generation Pump (NGP) using hydrological sensor technologies and high-speed video imaging to study pump interactions.
- Manage complex data analysis processes and work with live animals in line with UK Home Office methodologies and industry regulatory standards.
- Present research findings to Pumpflow’s engineering team, translating results into practical engineering solutions.
Qualifications
- Upper second-class honours degree or above (Master’s or Doctorate preferred) in a relevant subject (e.g., Engineering, Marine and Freshwater Biology, or Zoology).
- Strong data handling and analysis skills, preferably with experience in technical data (e.g., sensing).
- Experience conducting scientific experiments with live animals (preferably fish; not essential).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a detail-oriented mindset.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment; experience in an industrial RD&I environment or solving engineering problems within an industrial context.
- Experience in project management.
- Data analysis in R or Python.
- UK driving licence.
- Videography and photography experience.
