Position details: FTE 1.0, Fixed term 30 months, Salary £35,000‑£40,000 per annum, Annual Leave 28 days, Location: College Lane, Hatfield and CrossTech, 11 Gough Square, London, EC4A 3DE.

About the Programme: This position is part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme funded by Innovate UK. A KTP is a 3‑way collaboration between a graduate (or post‑graduate), a business and a university or research institution. The Associate will lead an innovation project with full support from company and academic supervisors, and benefit from expert coaching and mentoring.

Project Overview: The project will develop a real‑time computer vision and edge AI system for intelligent rail monitoring, enabling early hazard detection. The result will support CrossTech’s automated AI infrastructure inspection and improve railway safety and efficiency.

Main Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate will develop advanced real‑time computer vision and edge AI system for rail monitoring and hazard detection. Responsibilities include:

  • Data collection and analysis
  • Contribution to design and organisation of the research project
  • Contribution to academic peer‑reviewed papers and presentations
  • Dissemination of results
  • Writing final project reports and working papers
  • Active participation in seminars and other academic events

Skills and Experience Required: Proficiency in Python (NumPy, PyTorch), experience with CNN/Transformer models, experience working as part of a research team in a Higher Education Institution or industry. Strong foundations in AI/machine‑learning, particularly deep learning for video analytics, experience managing real‑world data capture and labelling from complex environments. Methodical approach, attention to detail, problem‑solving, planning and self‑management, confidentiality.

Desirable: Exposure to intelligent transport systems (ITS), radar and AI for safety‑critical applications, understanding of data governance, safety and security.

Qualifications Required: Minimum of a Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a relevant discipline.

Additional Requirements: Appointees requiring a work visa must prove UK right to work covering the whole project duration. Visa sponsorship will be considered after selection. Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate may be required. The successful applicant must start by 19 December 2026.
