We’re looking for a Senior Cyber Security Engineer to join our IT Operations team and lead on strengthening and continuously improving the University’s cyber security posture. The role is the technical lead and subject matter expert for cyber security, responsible for the design, implementation and ongoing management of our security controls, tools and policies. You’ll work across a variety of cyber security areas including vulnerability management, security tooling, audit compliance, policy development and incident response. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced cyber security professional who thrives on solution design, technical leadership and embedding a security by design principle across an IT environment.
Responsible for junior cyber security engineers, the role will work closely with IT colleagues and third‑party partners (including our managed SOC provider) to provide expert cyber security guidance and hands‑on support, ensuring best practice is followed and risks are effectively managed.
Key Skills:- Security Design & Compliance – Strong experience in designing and implementing technical security controls, developing cyber security policies, and supporting audits and compliance frameworks.
- Incident Response & Risk Management – Proven ability to detect, manage and remediate cyber security alerts and incidents, alongside experience of vulnerability prioritisation, cyber risk assessment and mitigation.
- Technical Leadership & Collaboration – Ability to provide expert cyber security advice to colleagues across IT, promoting a proactive, security‑first culture whilst working collaboratively across teams and with third‑party suppliers.
- Planning & Continuous Improvement – Confident in planning and delivering a cyber security roadmap, keeping up to date with emerging threats, technologies and sector best practice, and driving continuous improvement.
The role is primarily based at Park Campus but required to work across all University locations within Cheltenham & Gloucester as workload dictates.
