Job Description

Job Purpose

The Test Analyst will support high quality software testing (manual and automated) across various platforms and systems within Agile/Scrum and Waterfall methodology to improve the quality of the products delivered by the service. They will test functional and non functional aspects of system products, integrations and related services, using an iterative approach, to demonstrate a satisfactory level of quality has been achieved.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Support the development, implementation and maintenance of efficient and effective test plans and test cases based on specific needs of projects or continuous improvement activities for services.
  • Analyse and understand functional and non-functional specification documentation and systems to aid effective creation of of manual and automated test cases (functional and non- functional).
  • Support the creation and maintenance of robust regression test pack as required to meet project or continuous improvement activities for services /systems.
  • Supports the coordination and execution of manual and automated regression testing as required to meet project objectives or continuous improvement activities for services/systems.
  • Prepare progress and completion reports and metrics as required to meet project objectives or continuous improvement activities for services / systems.
  • Carry out data validation as part of testing.
  • Accurately record test findings, in line with agreed procedures.
  • Assist the Test Manager with improving the department’s quality assurance tools and processes.
  • Liaise with the Test Manager, Systems Development teams and/or Scrum Masters to create and add tasks to system backlogs as a result of issues discovered during testing.
  • Organise own workload within multiple projects by planning and prioritising own schedule and coordinating with other project team members in order to ensure that timescales and targets are met.
  • Deal with sensitive information and data held for all University staff with a very high degree of confidentiality and discretion adhering to data protection legislation.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar related role(s). Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training) and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A2 Professional knowledge of software testing principles and concepts.

A3 An understanding of the software development and release lifecycle.

A4 Professional working knowledge of Agile/Scrum working practices.

Desirable:

B1Professional working knowledge of Jira, Confluence, QMetry or comparable software tools to streamline the process of reporting, tracking, and resolving defects.

B2 An understanding of risk management.

B3 Professional working knowledge of running SQL queries and testing API Web services.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to devise, develop and implement test plans in consultation with key stakeholders and the Test Manager.

C2 Ability to write test scripts for manual and automated testing on software applications.

C3 Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and work effectively as part of a team.

C4 Ability to manage and prioritise workload amongst many projects, meet tight deadlines and work under pressure flexibly to support system upgrades.

C5 Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex situations, identify root causes, and propose effective solutions and associated documentation.

C6 Excellent communications and interpersonal skills both written and oral.

C7 Ability to apply initiative and professional judgement to independently resolve unforeseen issues and challenges.

Desirable:

D1 Ability to forge effective relationships in a complex matrix management environment.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Professional working experience of the software development lifecycle, system testing, integration testing, user acceptance testing.

E2 Experience of writing test plans and test cases with input from key stakeholders.

E3 Experience documenting success and failures of executed test procedures.

E4 Experience of functional and non-functional testing.

E5 Experience of test cycles/iterations of test executions.

E6 Experience of working with test automation tools.

Desirable:

F1 Experience of working in the HE Sector.

F2 Experience of working with Enterprise Integration Platforms (e.g. Boomi, MuleSoft).

F3 Experience of API Testing.

F4 Experience of unit testing frameworks (i.e NUnit, JUnit, PHPUnit).

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 – £45,413 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended.
