Job Purpose
Toprovidein-depth technicalexpertisein the College of Science and Engineering supporting research, undergraduate and post graduate teaching. The role provides advice on the creation, set up and best operation of technical resources to aid the delivery of research and teachingobjectives and will play a critical role in delivering support in analytical chemistry and in the safe handling, use, and disposal of hazardous substances. The postholder will apply a range of laboratory, scientific, and chemical skills to support a range of technical services in line with the College Strategy.
Main Duties andResponsibilities
1. Provide in-depth technical knowledge, support, solutions, and advice in chromatography and spectroscopy systems to academic and student service users within research labs to contribute to the delivery of research objectives.
2. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient operation of laboratories across multiple buildings within the college to ensure an excellent experience for all service users.
3. Develop, create and test scientific analytical equipment, procedures, protocols, and techniques. Diagnose faults and troubleshoot day-to-day problems carrying out appropriate maintenance and contacting relevant service providers as required.
4. Design, plan and organise technical activities to meet the needs of service users within agreed timescales.
5. Advise, train and provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of scientific analytical equipment.
6. In liaison with relevant senior staff, monitor technical standards, advise, implement and evaluate improvements to existing protocols as required.
7. Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately.
8. Maintain appropriate stock levels, including appropriate preparation of specialised media and samples as required. Source and purchase equipment, consumables and supplies within defined budget.
9. In consultation with relevant senior staff, ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the technical workspace and facilities, implementing health and safety policies as determined by the University and the Health and Safety Executive. Support the completion of risk assessments and COSHH forms. Carry out lab inductions for new lab users.
10. Be responsible for handling and disposal of solvent and chemical waste and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation in labs across the College. Ensure safe implementation of new materials and ongoing storage of potentially hazardous materials.

A1 Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience: Skill level equivalent to achievement of Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2 Detailed knowledge of Analytical Chemistry, including knowledge of chromatography systems (e.g. Ionic, Gas, Liquid) and/or spectroscopy.
A3 Detailed knowledge of all aspects of laboratory safety, COSHH and Risk Assessments

E4 Evidence of equipment maintenance, repairs and servicing.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £26,338 – £30,805 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
