Job Purpose

The postholder will support the establishment and running of spatial omics within the Molecular Analysis Facility that currently offers bulk RNA/DNA library preparations, single cell sequencing and comprehensive bioinformatics data processing and visualisation. The postholder will be an experienced technician with working knowledge of spatial transcriptomics. The postholder will act as a resource within and external to the Molecular Analysis Facility by providing specialist expertise, guidance and advice to users. The postholder will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative workflows in spatial omics to meet the needs of researchers thereby enhancing service provision and supporting research initiatives in spatial biology.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. In conjunction with the Molecular Analysis Facility Technical Lead and Lab Manager, support the establishment of a spatial omics service within the Molecular Analysis Facility supporting the development and implementation of innovative workflows to support projects.

2. Lead on the day-to-day operation of the spatial omic provision and serve as the primary point of contact in the Molecular Analysis Facility for researchers interested in utilising spatial transcriptomics and related methods such as spatial multi-omics.

3. Provide researchers with insight to effective experimental design and expertise on experimental conditions that effectively address the needs of the research question including advice on the most appropriate spatial omic technologies based on their needs.

4. Oversee the operation, management and maintenance of spatial omic analytical platforms including, troubleshooting and resolving issues, and ensuring optimal performance of instruments.

5. Contribute to documenting research results for inclusion in papers, reports, and presentations, and contribute to the preparation of designated parts of such papers, reports and presentations.

6. Support the development and maintain collaborations with colleagues across MVLS and wider University of Glasgow, as well as researchers based at external institutions and industry working on spatial omics projects.

7. Line manage technical staff working in spatial omics.

8. Perform administrative tasks related to spatial omics service activities, including management of budgets and expenditure.

9. In conjunction with the Lab Manager ensure compliance with relevant Health and Safety as well as other legal requirements relating to spatial omics service provision, including maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records.

10. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field of spatial omics to ensure contributions to the MVLS SRF are maximised.

11. Where required, support colleagues and supervise less experienced team members, which may include supporting undergraduate and postgraduate graduate students.

12. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/ School/Group and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research/teaching aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by Head of Service.

14. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together and contribute to outreach activities.

For appointment at G7, the post holder would be expected to lead on the establishment of a spatial omics facility and to drive the direction of service provision interacting with senior colleagues to provide advice and making specialist contributions to research proposals and projects.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9,10 or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification) in a relevant discipline or equivalent, including being professionally qualified in a relevant subject area with a broad range of experience in a similar role(s).

A2 Up-to-date specialist technical knowledge of spatial transcriptomics and related methods.

A3 Comprehensive specialist technical knowledge of all current spatial omic platforms, including spatial multi-omics.

Desirable

B1 PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 12) in a relevant discipline.

Skills

Essential

C1 Practical skills of working with and maintaining a spatial omic platform.

C2 Ability to evaluate experimental data and equipment performance and redirect strategies to overcome issues.

C3 Ability to set priorities and manage own workload effectively to deliver a day-to-day service and meet project deadlines.

C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C5 Proven interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders with differing levels of understanding to conceptualise and interpret complex technical requirements.

C6 Knowledge of ethical and safety procedures for handling biological and clinical samples.

C7 Extensive practical skills of working with and maintaining several spatial transcriptomics or multi-omic platforms.

Experience

Essential

E1 Extensive practical experience of slide preparation and experience of histology.

E2 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

E3 Demonstration of a level of independence illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design and analysis of experiments, and drafting of papers.

E4 Experience of supervising technicians and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students.

E5 Experience of contributing to the development of a research strategy.

E6 Experience of managing budgets.

E7 Experience in bioinformatics and/or data visualisation.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6/Grade 7, £33,482 – £37,174/£40,497 – £45,413 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week – compressed or part time hours may also be considered), and has funding available for up to 3 years in the first instance.
