Job Purpose
To make a leading contribution to the History of Education in Glasgow Project, working with Professors Kristinn Hermannsson, Kay Livingston and Margery McMahon. The purpose of the project is to capture and document the key milestones in the evolution of various educational institutions in Glasgow (from the 1940s onward), including but not limited to the University of Glasgow. The project aims to capture the accounts of people for whom this history was a reality to preserve the rich history of education in Glasgow. Both successful and less successful educational initiatives will be recorded and assessed so that lessons might be drawn from them. The project will start in 2026 and conclude in 2028. It will produce an edited publication on the history of education in Glasgow.
The successful candidate will be expected to help manage and coordinate this important project and contribute to the development, reviewing, editing and submission of the publication on the history of education in Glasgow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Take a leading role, individually and jointly in the planning and carrying out the research involved in History Project, in the writing process and the publication of the edited book.
- Survey research and literature to identify and source any research and publications that are relevant to the history of education in Glasgow since the 1940s.
- Document the History Project, including maintaining records/database of any archive materials/documents collected and drafting progress reports and papers as appropriate.
- Contribute to the clarification of the scope of the History Project and identification of relevant people to capture their historical accounts of education in Glasgow, in cooperation with the Editorial Board.
- Prepare and submit ethical approval application for the History Project to the CoSS Ethical Committee to gain approval for capturing the historical accounts.
- Interview relevant people individually or jointly and record their historical accounts, liaise with them to agree transcripts and where relevant supporting them in the preparation of abstracts for potential chapters for the book.
- Attend and support the Editorial Board meetings, including preparation of agendas in cooperation with the Chair of the Editorial Board and recording and preparing notes of the meetings.
- Prepare a writing guide and timeline for identified authors of chapters and maintain communication with the authors to ensure their contribution is delivered on time.
- Take a leading role, individually and jointly in the editing process of individual chapters and of the publication as whole, including contributing to preparing review guidelines, identifying reviewers and liaising with authors to ensure amendments are made according to the review timeline.
- Take a leading role individually or jointly in the preparation of the edited book for publication online, including the preparation of frontmatter content, content page, figures or tables, index etc.
- Contribute to and support the presentation and dissemination of the History Project and the publication at relevant events, seminar etc.
- Undertake administrative tasks related to the activities of the History Project, including budgets/expenditure.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by your line manager and the Head of School.
- Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s profile in line with University strategy.
- Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/School/Research Group/area, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

- Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

Knowledge & Qualifications

- A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) plus track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment, or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience.
- A2 A knowledge of/interest in the history of education in Glasgow relevant to outlined Job Purpose.
- A3 Well-developed working knowledge of research approaches and methods relevant to the History Project as outlined in the Job Purpose.
- A4 Developing track record of research outputs that illustrate research skills relevant to the History of Education Project and are compatible with enhancing the University’s research profile.
Skills

- C1 Ability to communicate material of a specialist nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activities.
- C2 Proven commitment to supporting others in the writing for academic publication and some experience of research project supervision.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term until 31 July 2028.
