Job Purpose
To deliver the operational elements of a market leading Print proposition for the University of Glasgow, operating within the wider Commercial Services directorate. This involves delivering the day-to-day printing requirements for all University and commercial stakeholders, ensuring requests are actioned efficiently and delivered to the specifications required. The role involves supporting the Print Supervisors to achieve all elements of the Print Unit operating plan.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Use specialist digital print and wide format print hardware and software within the University Print Unit to provide print and design services to internal and external customers.
- Provide professional expert advice and guidance to stakeholders relating to design principles and technologies.
- Accurately capture bookings, provide competitive quotes, and proactively manage customer bookings.
- Consistently review the uptake of quotations, actively engaging with customers who have not proceeded with quotations.
- Responsible for the accurate and efficient delivery of all printing activities.
- Attend and contribute to meetings with clients regarding design work; providing knowledge and expertise to be able to offer appropriate solutions and guidance to produce innovative concepts and designs.
- Work in partnership with other key University Services, principally the Schools and Colleges, to develop and promote the Print Unit for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.
- Responsible for understanding and delivering the brand and visual identity of the University of Glasgow and reflect this through content and design assets ensuring all internal materials adhere to university brand guidelines.
- Provide information to existing and prospective customers on the services provided by the Print Unit and supply guidance on the production/needs of their jobs.
- Actively seek out new and emerging markets for potential business opportunities and work with the Print Unit Supervisor / Commercial Development Manager to develop and implement solutions.
- Consistently review key processes within the Print Unit, refine and deliver solutions to achieving efficient working practices.
- Share responsibility with Print Unit Supervisors for promoting the Print Unit services and securing business external to the University of Glasgow.
- Act as editor on a range of print and occasional web publications, adapting material as necessary for different audiences and different channels. Tasks include commissioning and sourcing content (text, image and audio/video), editing, sub-editing, writing, proofreading and overseeing design and layout to final artwork stage.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining the web to print website, incorporating student, staff and commercial platforms, ensuring key products and services are fully accessible, up to date, and functioning.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining all forms of social media, including responding to and acting upon customer requests and feedback.
- Undertake regular market research and evaluation of our services, summarise findings and report back to Print Unit Supervisor to grow internal and external revenue.
- Responsible for the regular reviewing and acting upon feedback from the Customer Experience portals, responding in the handwriting style and identify of the Print Unit.
- Achieve the Customer Satisfaction KPI.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
- A1 Scottish credit and qualification framework level 7 (HNC, VQ3) or equivalent and experience of personal development in graphic design or; ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
- A2 Detailed IT knowledge, with expertise, in Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat.
- A3 Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Desirable:
- B1 Graphic Design Qualification.
- B2 Knowledge of Photography such as image resolution and colour formatting.
- B3 Knowledge of website editing such as HTML.

- E4 Experience of handling customer enquiries, customer feedback and working within a high intensity, fast paced environment.

- F1 Previous experience of working in a busy customer facing environment.
- F2 Experience of planning and estimating of work.
- F3 Experience of cash handling and management payments.
- F4 Experience of designing for websites and social media.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 4, £23,881 - £26,338 per annum. This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and fixed term for up to 12 months.
