University of Glasgow – College of Arts and Humanities, School of Humanities – Research and Teaching. Job Ref: 184794. Salary: Grade 7 (£41,064–£46,049 per annum). Location: Glasgow. Contract: Full‑time (35 hours per week), fixed‑term until 30 May 2029/2030 with anticipated start date 5 January 2026.
Job Purpose
To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by providing teaching, assessment and administration for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and undertaking scholarship to enhance learning and teaching within the Philosophy subject area.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver teaching, supervision and assessment across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
- Carry out course administration within required timescales, ensuring timely feedback and effective communication of assessment requirements.
- Develop the curriculum, supporting a research‑led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment.
- Use learning technologies to support blended and/or online delivery of courses.
- Facilitate inclusive, evidence‑based learning across face‑to‑face and online formats, promoting student participation and attainment.
- Engage in scholarship about student learning, disseminating evidence to improve teaching practice and attending relevant conferences.
- Develop effective relationships with students and respond to diverse learning needs.
- Build relationships with external stakeholders for knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach (e.g., widening access).
- Participate in local or overseas activities related to student recruitment, orientation and induction, and other university initiatives such as employability and student mobility.
- Engage in continuing professional development.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School and Head of Subject.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential: PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.
Fine breadth and deep knowledge of the specialist subject and of teaching methods suitable for the discipline.
Strong knowledge of policy, practice and procedures, including a broader university/sector/external awareness.
Up‑to‑date specialist understanding in the field, ability to inspire students, and provision of pastoral care.
Desirable: Competence in social and political philosophy, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind or a related area, and the ability to contribute to teaching needs in the department.
Essential Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills at a specialist level.
Essential Experience: Planning and progressing work activities independently; commitment to open research and open educational resources; support for the career development of colleagues.
