The School of Social and Political Sciences is seeking a dynamic and broadly trained sociologist to appoint into a Lecturer in Sociology (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track) role within the School of Social and Political Sciences.

The postholder will be based in the sociology subject area and will focus on learning, teaching, and teaching scholarship, particularly covering courses in the field of sociology of class and inequalities. The postholder will also actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

This post is part time (28 hours per week – 0.8 Full Time Equivalent) and fixed term for up to 12 months (with an anticipated start date of 1st September 2025).

Job Purpose

The School of Social and Political Sciences seeks dynamic and broadly trained sociologists to contribute to our learning, teaching and scholarship. The post focuses on learning, teaching, and teaching scholarship, particularly covering courses in the field of sociology of class and inequalities.

To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Deliver in-person a range of teaching, supervision, dissertation supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the required subject in the sociology of class.

  2. Carry out course administration within required timescales, ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

  3. Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

  4. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

  5. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face delivery formats such as tutorials/laboratory exercises, lectures, problem- based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

  6. Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment [e.g. open days, summer school], orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.

  7. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

  8. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

  9. Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.

  10. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School (Prof. Simon Joss).

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Relevant PhD or equivalent teaching experience in the required subject.

A2 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the subject. To be able to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

Desirable:

B1 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.

B2 Research specialist in the sociology of inequalities, particularly in social class.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in sociology to work within the subject area.

C2 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.

C3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures, including broader University/sector/external [e.g. commercial] awareness.

C4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the subject with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level within the subject, applying initiative and independent judgement.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 – £45,413 per annum pro rata.
