The University of Glasgow is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Accounting (Tax and/or Audit) within the Adam Smith Business School.

The Adam Smith Business School and the Accounting and Finance subject group at the University of Glasgow seeks a dynamic and broadly trained individual to take leadership in learning, teaching and scholarship. The post is learning, teaching, and scholarship focused.

We are looking for candidates in the areas of accounting but are particularly interested in candidates who offer industry or scholarship and teaching expertise in Taxation and/or Audit.

This may include candidates with a strong track record in teaching and scholarship, as well as those who bring substantial industry expertise and practical insights into these areas. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate their specialist knowledge into the School’s teaching portfolio and contribute to the development of innovative and practice-informed learning experiences.

For appointment at Grade 8, the candidate will also make a substantial and positive contribution to the Subject/School’s programmes and scholarship, delivering an excellent student experience. They will provide academic leadership and management associated with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and engage in rigorous enquiries into learning and teaching practices.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.

Job Purpose

They will provide academic leadership and management associated with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and engage in rigorous enquiries into learning and teaching practices.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Deliver in-person a range of teaching, dissertation supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the required subject.
  2. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
  3. Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
  4. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  5. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem- based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
  6. Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment [e.g. open days, summer school], orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.
  7. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  8. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
  9. Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.
  10. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

  • A1 Relevant PhD or professional qualification or equivalent teaching experience in the required subject.
  • A2 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the subject. To be able to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

For appointment at Grade 8:

  • A3 A growing reputation for scholarship within the subject areas.

Desirable:

  • B1 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.

Skills

Essential:

  • C1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in accounting of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
  • C2 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
  • C3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures, including broader University/sector/external [e.g. commercial] awareness.
  • C4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the subject with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

For appointment at Grade 8:

  • C5 Track record of scholarship and development and delivery of teaching, and proven ability to develop and devise teaching programmes, techniques and methods.
  • C6 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge of the subject to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.
  • C7 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment activities.
  • C8 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and develop early career academic colleagues.
  • C9 Continuing engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
  • C10 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

Experience

Essential:

  • E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities, applying initiative and independent judgement.

For appointment at Grade 8:

  • E2 Experience and achievement in the subject, in an expanding personal academic portfolio.
  • E3 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.
