Job Purpose
To carry out nursing duties to the highest standard in accordance with hospital systems of work to ensure all animal needs are met and excellent standards are maintained within the Equine Hospital. Contribute to the examination, treatment, and care of both in and out‑patients to facilitate the smooth running of the Hospital.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Organise and prioritise tasks to ensure all patient’s needs are met.
- Provide nursing care to multiple medical/surgical in‑patients and out‑patients, including administering medication, fluid therapy, application & care of dressings.
- Provide nursing care to multiple medical in‑patients in a busy hospital environment with a wide range of medical diseases/conditions.
- Recognise normal/abnormal signs; be familiar with appropriate drugs and potential side effects for common medical conditions; perform some diagnostic tests.
- Maintain patient clinical records and invoices; ensure chargeable procedures are recorded for accurate invoicing.
- Communicate with external and internal parties (referring vets, clients, labs, post‑mortem room).
- Respond to advice calls and triage out‑of‑hours emergency calls.
- Ensure stock levels of drugs and consumables are maintained; add new stock items to the computer pricing system; maintain pharmacy records and Controlled Drug registers.
- Dispense prescribed medications; understand VMD regulations and administration issues for commonly prescribed veterinary medicines.
- Ensure hospital equipment is handled correctly, cleaned, and maintained; maintain high hygiene standards.
- Ensure patients are dealt with correctly according to owners’ instructions and hospital policy.
- Adhere to Health and Safety protocols.
- Create client invoices by discharge and monitor outstanding invoices.
- Maintain RCVS registered status – complete ~15 hrs CPD annually and pay retention fee on time.
- Supervise, assess and train non‑academic staff and students; conduct inductions.
- Perform any other tasks within the level of responsibility deemed suitable by the line manager.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
- A1 – RCVS Veterinary Nursing qualification and fully registered.
- A2 – Knowledge of many aspects of veterinary nursing, protocols and procedures.
- A3 – Knowledge of current Health & Safety legislation.
Desirable
- B2 – Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or Degree in Veterinary Nursing.
- B3 – Clinical Coach experience or willingness to undertake training.

Terms and Conditions
Salary at Grade 4, £25,804 – £27,319 per annum, pro‑rated to the hours assigned. 4 positions available, fractional/part‑time (minimum 10 hours per year), fixed‑term up to 31 July 2029. All hours paid via timesheets; out‑of‑hours shared rota; work over 7 days shared with the rest of the student nursing assistant team. Location: Weipers Equine Centre.
