The University of Glasgow seeks to appoint an outstanding Equine Surgeon to join Glasgow Equine Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for equine clinical care, teaching, and research. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic, collaborative team delivering a high-quality equine referral service. The successful candidate will contribute to a busy and varied caseload, working at the forefront of equine surgery while supporting veterinary surgeons across Scotland and northern England.

Job Purpose

To lead and develop an efficient and effective equine surgery referral service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Equine Hospital, and to develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical scholarship, thereby contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To develop and enhance the equine surgery referral service by providing a high quality service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support teaching and scholarship activities.
  • To develop novel approaches and techniques to aid and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.
  • To participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.
  • To ensure that clinical quality assurance measures are in place and validated.
  • To provide leadership, scholarship and mentorship to staff associated with the equine surgery referral service and be responsible for the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.
  • To continually update professional skills and knowledge as appropriate in support of clinical, research and teaching excellence.
  • To provide leadership in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the equine surgery referral service at national and international level as appropriate.
  • To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the appropriate speciality and, in so doing, fulfil the criteria for Specialist status.
  • To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the equine surgery referral service of the Equine Hospital.
  • To lead the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate teaching activities and the Clinical Scholar didactic programme within equine surgery in accordance with established programme.
  • To develop and encourage the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
  • To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques) and engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
  • To conduct personal scholarship of an external reputation and maintain a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed journals and/or textbooks.
  • To identify, manage and supervise appropriate clinical research projects/trials through a portfolio of individual/joint research projects, to secure the funding required to under‑pin the long‑term growth of the activity and to present research findings at national and international meetings to ensure a high profile for the School, as well as the University of Glasgow.
  • To promote interdisciplinary and collaborative clinical and scientific investigation with staff in other Schools, Colleges, Universities and other clinical organisations.
  • To attend and actively contribute/participate in national/international events/major research seminars/conferences within service area by invitation or otherwise.
  • To act in a senior role within the Division/School, as directed by the Head of School, to advance student and staff academic development.
  • To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with University Strategy.

  • A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
  • A2 Appropriate postgraduate specialist clinical qualification in equine surgery (e.g.) or allied discipline (e.g.) that would allow the individual to register as an RCVS Specialist. DipECVS, DipACVS, RCVS diploma, FANZCVS.
  • Desirable
    • B1 Masters, PhD (or other evidence of research training).
    • B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent teaching qualification.

    • C1 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
    • C2 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.

    • D1 Understanding and experience of statistics, databases and other IT applications/packages.

    • E1 Extensive post‑diploma experience in an equine surgical speciality.
    • E2 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
    • E3 A track record of clinical research publications.
    • E4 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in an equine surgical speciality and a major contributor to the treatment and management of diseases in this field.
    • E5 Proven experience of management of clinical service.
    • E6 An established reputation in clinical research and a major contributor in the small animal medical disciplines.
  • Desirable
    • F1 Successful supervision/career development of post‑graduate students studying for clinical diplomas.
    • F2 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.

    Terms and Conditions

    Salary will be Grade 7/8/9, £41,064 - £46,049/£50,253 - £58,225/£59,966 - £67,468 per annum plus a clinical supplement and out-of‑hours allowance. This post is full time (35 Hours Per Week) and open-ended. The successful candidate for the Clinician post will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP). This will provide you as an early career academic staff member to be developed and supported over a specified timeframe to facilitate the advancement of your academic career.
