Job Purpose
Assist and contribute to University language provision by facilitating the portfolio of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and English Language courses within the Lifelong Learning (LLL) team. Effectively and efficiently undertake the range of duties associated with the ESOL and English Language courses: teaching, assessment and associated administration, to contribute to meeting learning and teaching objectives for these courses. Liaise with University staff involved in Sanctuary provision to aid and enable students to progress via ESOL classes to subsequent University provision and study.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities (including tutorials/seminars) online, face to face and/or in a blended-learning format, as required for teaching the University LLL ESOL and English Language courses.
- Contribute to the design and development of appropriate teaching materials to ensure the content and methods of delivery meet the learning objectives of the ESOL and English Language courses.
- Participate in the assessment process, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning. This includes setting and marking assignments and exams in accordance with the code of assessment.
- Assist with the facilitation of student learning, and any practical work, advising on skills, methods and techniques to assist the transfer of knowledge, and respond appropriately to the diverse range of learner support needs.
- Contribute, as appropriate, to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum of the ESOL and English Language courses, under the supervision of the Subject Coordinator, and liaising with staff involved in University Sanctuary provision.
- Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision including the use of Moodle and other ICT platforms and materials.
- Participate in a range of course administration duties, within required timescales, such as communicating with students, keeping attendance records, internal moderation, return of grades and responding to student feedback from course evaluation surveys.
- Assess the standard and ability of students on the ESOL courses to determine the correct teaching level for each student and appropriate time for each student to progress through the English language levels.
- Liaise with University Sanctuary staff to aid students in progressing through ESOL classes and into subsequent University provision to enable students to progress to University study, providing advice and guidance for students as appropriate.
- Attend and complete all necessary and mandatory University training (online or in person) and other discipline-specific training as required.
- Maintain a weekly record of student attendance and report this to the Subject Coordinator.
- Actively encourage the completion of student evaluation forms.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of LLL.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential- A1 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework Level 10 (Honours degree). May be working towards post-graduate qualification such as a Masters (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 11) or PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12). Or Equivalent professional qualifications in relevant academic/research discipline, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
- A2 Appropriate level of knowledge and expertise in the ESOL and English Language teaching.
- B1 Professional teaching qualification or working towards one.
- B2 Current knowledge of the Scottish HE system.
- B3 Clear understanding of the pre-determined standards and regulations for the conduct and output of the role and/or team.
- B4 Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs and standards required.

- F1 Relevant administrative experience (e.g. student support, course administration).
- F2 Experience of working with learners in HEIs or F.E.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum, pro rata. This post is part time (17.5 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 12 months.
