The University of Glasgow’s School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Medical Genetics (Learning, Teaching & Scholarship Track). The School is renowned for pioneering teaching methods and superb facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate study. Applications are welcome from individuals who hold a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent qualification, in a related discipline and possess knowledge in medical genetics and genomics related to developing teaching programmes, methodologies and learning support.
Job Purpose
To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by contributing to teaching, assessment and administration processes associated with postgraduate medical genetics programmes and to undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities across the medical genetics MSc postgraduate programmes and, to a lesser extent, related undergraduate programmes.
- Carry out course administration and teaching-related activities within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, particularly assessment requirements and criteria, with timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment.
- Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, organisation, feedback and assessment.
- Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face-to-face and online delivery formats.
- Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance teaching practices.
- Attend and participate in appropriate workshops, seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching, scholarship and/or professional practice in medical genetics and genomics.
- Develop effective working relationships with students and respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
- Undertake student support activities including personal development planning, mentoring meetings and pastoral support.
- Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange and outreach.
- Participate in local and potentially overseas activities associated with student recruitment and other School and University initiatives.
- Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager or Head of School.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential Knowledge/Qualifications
- Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or equivalent qualification, in a related discipline.
- Sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge in medical genetics and genomics related to developing teaching programmes.
- A Distinction or high Merit from an MSc in medical genetics, or equivalent professional experience.
- An in-depth understanding of the molecular scientific basis of diagnostic genetic laboratory techniques.
Desirable Knowledge/Qualifications
- Track record of experience in development and delivery of effective teaching and learning support.
Essential Skills
- Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature effectively both orally and in writing.
- Up to date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field of medical genetics.
Desirable Skills
- Excellent IT skills.
- Excellent presentation skills.
Essential Experience
- Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines.
- Experience of undertaking laboratory work including genetic techniques.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum. This post is full time and open ended. The successful candidate will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP).
