Lecturer in British Romantic Literature in Glasgow

The School of Critical Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Romantic Literature. Applications are invited from candidates with an appropriate record of academic achievement in English Literature, with a proven research and teaching specialism in British Romantic Literature. We especially welcome applicants working on British Romantic-period theatre and Digital Humanities, who have an appetite for academic leadership, knowledge of university systems and experience of working as part of a team within a university environment.

Candidates should have a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in English Literature, with a substantial publication profile and significant experience teaching and supervising within the subject area in higher education. English Literature is a subject that works closely with the School of Critical Studies’ other subject areas of English Language and Linguistics, Scottish Literature and Theology and Religious Studies. The School is also home to programmes in Creative Writing and in Global Communications. In its research, the School fosters excellent connections with collaborators across Glasgow and beyond, and English Literature colleagues work actively and impactfully with local partners towards public engagement with their research and publications. The study of the Romantic period is a particular strength of English Literature at the University of Glasgow, and this post will enhance that profile.

Job Purpose
To undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School and College’s strategic objectives. This is a Post-doctoral role in English Literature in the School of Critical Studies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop and progress individual and/or joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.
• Publish high quality critical research, for dissemination where appropriate, identifying potential sources of funding and contributing to and/or leading funding applications to help develop and enhance the research profile of the School and College.
• Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School and College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.
• Contribute to the planning, organisation, and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co-ordinator for one or more courses.
• Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline.
• Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
• Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.
• Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
• Take on administrative or management roles within the subject and/or School as assigned by the Head of Subject and/or Head of School.
• Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

• Essential: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role.
• A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the discipline of English Literature and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
• A3 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field of British Romantic Literature with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.

Desirable:

• D1 Proven ability to teach and research British Romantic-period theatre.
• D2 Proven ability to research Digital Humanities.

• Essential: C1 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
• C2 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the school’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.
• C3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness.
• C4 Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the research and teaching activities within the subject area and wider School environment.
• C5 Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities.
• C6 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

Experience

• Essential: E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

Desirable:

• F1 Experience of teaching in higher education at postgraduate level.
• F2 Experience of administration in a higher education context.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum. This post is full time (35 hours per week) and is open ended. All applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK or be eligible to obtain permission to work in the UK. This role may be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route, subject to meeting the relevant Home Office requirements, including any applicable tradeable points criteria.
